The Car Saga Continues
Thank you everyone. No offense to anyone who owns one, but I have always had a distrust of Fords and it seems it may be justified.
After a lot of tears and drama on my part, we have a loan. It's a good loan. It's enough to buy something that will work. It has probably the best interest rate we've ever gotten on anything. We're officially taking on more debt. I'll officially be working more overtime. Ah well.
M. and I were up into the wee hours...well wee hours for us...11:30...looking at cars. We've found a couple we're interested in...they're both 2001 Saab wagons with not too many miles. I'm going to send my father to take a look at one today. If those don't prove to be okay, we'll probably go for a similarly aged Volkswagon Jetta wagon.
We have a friend's car that we're borrowing indefinately but I think we'll take care of this on Tuesday.
Okay, I admit it...after the shock wore off, I'm excited. We've been driving the crap-ass amythyst pearl Dodge Neon long enough to seriously resent the beast. When Stacey and Angele bought their new car there was sadness and mourning the moving on of the Echo. If I could set our car on fire, I would. Then I would be sad that it was burnt to a crisp only because it would mean I couldn't set it on fire again.
Goodbye crap-ass car. I'll kick your tires on your way out.

LMAO. Yeah, I don't think Neons are very loveable from what I've heard. My Echo rocked!
Glad to hear you'll get something "new to you" and that it will be way cooler and safer and reliable. Yay!!! Debt sucks but new cars rock!
Loans suck but it's kind of the perfect time because the interest rates have been lowered so much in the past few months. I kick myself every time they lower because I have a 7% rate on my car loan.
Hooray for SAABs, I vote for that one! A friend of mine was hit by a drunk driver a few years ago and would have died if she wasn't in a SAAB. Seriously! She came away with a swollen ankle that kept her from dancing for a few weeks even though her car was completely totalled!!!
Good luck on the car front... if the engine light in my car has been on since Sept, should I be worried???
OK, you didn't ask for feedback on the current options, but here goes anyway. Consumer Reports has ratings on used cars - those might be good to check out. I know from my own research when we were buying a car in 2004 - and from my brother's experience, who owned one - that there are issues with Jettas (and Passats - which I thought I wanted) of that vintage. I don't know much about the Saab, except that my sense is that they can be expensive to repair. Is that true? We bought a Toyota Matrix, which I LOVE.
Be careful of the VW, we've had nothing but trouble with our 2001 Beetle (of course, Jettas are a different engine, but just a heads up). We've put so much money into it we can't afford to get rid of it. Ugh! Good luck with the car hunt! Congrats on the good loan.

I have to second those who are cautious about VWs. We bought a 1998 Passat in 2002 and had nothing but problems with it. We finally ditched it this Spring after putting at least $5000 into it. We now have a Subaru Legacy and love it.

Truthfully I'm crossing my fingers that the Saab will work out. It just looks perfect. My brother has one and loves it. It has all the amenities we're looking for.
I've heard the same kinds of things about VWs which makes me a little nervous.
We should know tomorrow morning. My dad is going to call us with the report and we'll go forward if it looks good.
The only thing that sounds good about your car is the color. I envy that. (Though our Saturn is a nice silver-blue.)
I do recommend Saturns for a variety of reasons but you seem to have found what you want.
My stepfather swears by Ford Escort station wagons, but I have no idea why.
Just wanted to say thank you for blogging. My wife and I are expecting our first child in March. I have really enjoyed your blog and I have found it to be very helpful! I have put up our blog and I added your blog as one of our favorites! Again, thank you for taking the time to blog.

Oh Saabs! Yay. Funny, I just wrote about the passing of my very beloved Saab.
Buying cars is hard. I'm glad y'all are making headway.
I just caught that you used to drive a purple car - me too! We have a bizarre amount of superficial stuff in common.
