Saving the Environment, One Baby Item at a Time

When we told M.'s mom we were going to start TTC, she questioned whether or not we had enough money to have a baby because "when it's your baby, you're going want the best for it."

The guantlet was thrown down.

M. is probably one of the feistiest people I know and her mother's assumption that we would only want the nicest things for our little bundle of joy was like waving a red cape in front of a very pissed off bull.

From that moment, M. became determined that our baby would NOT have the best. No high-end expensive crib. No plush play pen. No super frilly, extra cute crib set. I mean, put them in a cardboard box with a sheet and call it done. Toys? Tin foils rolls into a nice ball. Shoe boxes can be very fun.

Enter...CRAIGS LIST.

Which is why we are spending the entire day that was originally scheduled for sewing running around picking up used...you heard me, USED*...baby items.

*M. wants me to make sure everyone knows that she is highly responsible and has made sure everything we're picking up is safe and appropriate.

I couldn't agree more with this approach! We used Craig's List extensively and got some very nice stuff. Things like daycare can be expensive, but we have not spent a lot of money on "stuff" for our kids.

I heart craigslist. It is awesome for baby gear. I even got my Clearblue monitor there. And they have used stuff that is the best and the cutest.

We ended up with a $700 crib - totally free, because it's a hand-me-down from K's coworker. (On the advice of _Baby Bargains_, we're replacing the mattress, though.) It's kind of funny, since if we were going to buy a new crib, we wouldn't spend that much!

Ooooh yeah, Craig's List is the place to go! We got a crib and mattress, exactly what we were looking for, for $60! $60! The stuff we liked in the store, new, would have rang up around $400-500. We want our baby to have the best, which is why we choose to get used, the baby won't be in the crib for very long, so we'll have plenty of cash to spend on more important things.

Yeah, I was just saying to a friend last night that nobody who has a baby should buy ANYTHING new until their kid is about 6 years old (except carseats!! do not buy a used carseat!!). There's just so much wonderful stuff out there in great condition and it's so much more affordable and practical. Besides Craigslist, get to know your local thirft stores and consignment shops. If you have Freecycle in your area, that's great too.

Hey! Used baby stuff is awesome! In fact I have tons of outgrown baby clothing that needs a new home, so if you're interested, drop me a line! :)

DON'T BUY STUFF YET!

Seriously - there's only about 5 baby items in the entire world, and they all get passed around moments before the little babushka is born....

We bought stuff 2 weeks "pre-Malka" - and we STILL inherited a TON o' crap.

And have passed it on, thank you very much.

:)

hey, why not! I know in our case, our families will buy us waaaaaaaay too much nice stuff, especially the grandmas. So hell no am I spending my money on clothes and toys! Friends have already given us a ton of stuff too. Although I did buy a bunch of stuff from American Apparel online yesterday because I really want the baby to have some black onesies and t-shirts, and some solid colored stuff when it's little. I just hate all the pastel shit and plain white gerber onesies.
