Body Pillow Advice Needed

Okay, so I spent the entire night being more uncomfortable than I've been this entire pregnancy. I've been sleeping with a pillow between my knees and that's worked so far, but suddenly my hips are ACHING. I feel like I can't spend more than a half hour or so on one side before I need to flip. I'm not having too many problems lying on my back...yet...but I feel it's not 100% safe to spend a lot of time on my back.

All of this is has me contimplating the body pillow. Which is why I need some help from people who are going through or have been through this.
  1. There's the Snoogle...that funky curled pillow that's supposed to fit around your back. Remember, I'm a tall, fat girl and I'm concerned it may not fit.
  2. There's the straight body pillow that would let me hug it and support my knees...but no belly support when I get bigger.
  3. There's the underneath pillow that supports the belly and back...but no knee support and no hugger.
HELP! I want to make the right decision and not end up with a body pillow collection.

At 27 weeks I've found that the aches and pains come and go. I've had nights where I simply can't get comfortable. I've had nights when I don't sleep for going to the bathroom. I've had the hip aches. I'm using a regular cheap and cheerful fiber fill straight body pillow 6-10 bucks at your favorite discount store. I put the pillow between my knees and wedge another regular pillow behind my back so I don't roll back to far....but then I wad up two more pillows under my head, and turn my torso so that the top of me is kind of leaning back onto the pillow behind me.

For under the belly someone suggested rolling a towel...which fits better then a full sized pillow...but sometimes I just stuff part of the body pillow under my tummy.

We got the Snoogle and I love it. It fits however you want it to fit. But the hip pain happens sometimes. Just some bad nights here and there. I put a feathertop doubled on my side to give me more cushion for my hips but it doesn't seem to make much of a difference--the Snoogle is nice though.

I hope you can find something to relieve the hip pain. I have no suggestions and have been suffering with the same thing (roll over, hour later wake up b/c the hip hurts, roll over the other way, etc.). I have a straight body pillow from the Company Store that I really like...I put it between my legs and wedge the top part under my belly. Just wait, it gets even better when you can barely roll over (I'm 40w on Tues). It's so much fun to try to move the big body pillow as you roll over. And my fingers swell so much at night that it hurts to even try to grip the pillow. Ah, the joys of pregnancy! But I'm not complaining too much. ;) Good luck!

I wouldn't get the snoogle unless you plan to sleep alone at the end of pregnancy -- flipping over is nearly impossible and so is sleeping on the same side all night long...Otherwise, it was a good pillow.

Actually, you don't have to flip the Snoogle when you change sides. I found it much easier to not flip it and simply adjust how I was sleeping. On my left side I keep the long part under my belly and tuck the curved part between my legs and behind my butt. When I switch to the right, I just move my legs and use the long part behind my back, tuck the curved part between my legs and use the little bit of pillow from the curved part for under my belly. Works well for me. I found it much better for my partner than when I had tons of pillows all over the place.

I don't have the snoogle but I want to get one..I'm tall too, and not the thinnest tall girl, and my last pregnancy I gained 50 lbs so I got quite big. But I've heard such wonderful amazing things about it that I really want to get one.. Good luck! I know the last trimester isn't the most comfortable one..definitely get something to help! Even if it's TWO cheap body pillows, OR one body pillow and a super fluffy regular pillow for the knees/legs. It'll make nights so much more comfortable! Good luck!

Hello. It seems fitting that this last post is about pillows, since I have read them all (from the very beginning) over the last 30 hours, and since it is now 2:30 in the morning. I look forward to reading the advice later today.

But first, I want to thank you and congratulate you. I have laughed, cried, smiled, and pondered your posts. I am a gay married girl in Boston, getting ready to start the insane ride of ttc. I have learned more from your blog than all of the books I have read, because to hear that it takes time is different from reading the day to day accounts. Thanks.

And a question . . . whatever happened with the ttc group you were on the verge of starting, and have your neighbors had success?

BostonGayGal the TTC support group we were trying to start never got going. Partly because no one showed up and partly because we ended up pregnant the cycle we were having our first meeting. Our neighbors decided to stop TTC shortly after that and haven't started up again.

I'm glad you enjoyed our journey. This blog kept both M. and I sane at times. It was a hard road and I'm still amazed we sitting here pregnant!

don't know if you remember reading about my hip pain... it lasted about 5 weeks and there was one or two of those where i used a cane for support it bothered me so much and tylenol was useless...

i used a regular body pillow...

what i learned later, in childbirth class, was to look for some hypericum oil (sp?) - it's st johns wart extract (pills are unsafe) and it soothes sore spots like hips. it was great on my back, but my hip was better by then...

hope you get to feeling better :-)

I got the Boppy pregnancy comfort pillow. Dave called it my "amoeba"! I was 5'8" and 210# when I got pregnant and it fit me just fine. I got THE best sleep with it. I had awful hip pain, too. I found that the best thing for it was swimming. No frog-kick, though. Just kick like you're snorkeling.

Hey, whatever happened to the belly pictures?

Glad you two survived the family dinner =)

I have a snoogle, and I really love it. I love that I can put my knees up and "lean" back against the back part, feeling a bit like I'm sleeping on my back without being in a dangerous position.
I'm 5'5", and I have a LOT of room left over that I'm sure someone even a full foot taller than me could fit in it.
And I agree with the PP about turning over, I just leave the pillow in place and turn myself over inside it.
It *does* tend to separate you from your partner, but that can also be worked around with practice. And hey, it's only for a few more months, not the rest of your life! Comfort is important. :)

I have the "comfort U". It's fucking huge but it rocks! I've had it for years.

I used a cheap, extra-long pillow from Target. It was the greatest thing ever. The only time I was comfortable was when I was in bed with my pillow. I actually slept very well with it.
