Grandmas Side Snap Shirt Smackdown

We went shopping with M.'s mom about two weeks ago and got to hear all about what she thinks works for a baby. M's. mother declared that she doesn't know why everyone likes onesies and SIDE SNAP SHIRTS are simply a pain in the ass.

Then my mother was over last night and quizzing us over what we might be missing. The end result was that we're actually not missing much...until...she called on their way home and asked if we have SIDE SNAP SHIRTS.

M. responded that we have about six in addition to about 65 onesies. My mother responds...

Ohhhhhhhh, you need more than six. You need a TON of those.

...and proceeds to try to get my father to pull off the freeway and head to the nearest Babies 'r' Us. Color grandpa NOT HAPPY.

Although I don't come from the most reasonable family, luckily I married a level headed woman who reminded crazed grandma that it was almost 9 pm on a Sunday and no store would still be open. Color grandpa happy again.

We think it should be a battle of the Tons-of-Side-Snap-Shirts Grandma vs. Those-Useless-Side-Snap-Shirts Grandma. Pay per view. Live. No holds barred. Lots of blood and guts.

Let the assvice flow.

We did prefer side-snap shirts in the beginning. Onesies have to go on over the head and doing that to a newborn is not easy (although probably harder on the parents than the baby!). Plus there's some thoughts that onesies can irritate the umbilical stump.

But six is definitely enough! We had one and that wasn't enough, but I'd think 3-4 would be sufficient.

Ok, delurking to put my two cents in. For us, side snaps were better as we chose to have our son circumcised and the ointment we applied to help him heal repelled all urine out of the diaper. Thus we changed a lot of diapers and onesises until we discovered the side snap.

My daughter never wore the tee-shirts once she was home from the hospital because they "ride-up" under her clothes. Onesies work better, but she has so many I could throw them out everytime she wears one!

We didn't buy/request a lot of onesies because I have heard from my cloth diapering mama friends that they suck with cloth diapers. So we bought more t-shirts.

We loved the side-snap shirts! We didn't use them for that long, but in the early few weeks, they were really handy.

We used 'em - but we snagged them from the hospital - LOL!

I don't even know what a side snap shirt is...

We use onsies all the time, with cloth diapers. They are tighter with cloth diapers since you have the big bulk of the diaper to contend with. But they work just fine. We have onsies that slide over the head and ones that button up at the front. It is nice to have the button up ones because it is hard to do the over-the-head thing at first. But meh, you get used to it and I really don't have a preference now. The only clothes I don't appreciate are ones that don't have easy access to the diaper or shirts that button up in the back.

We don't have nearly the amount of onesies you have but we are just fine. You do so much laundry anyway...

Can't believe you're so close to seeing LB! Can't wait. :)

we had 2 side snap shirts, and they were mostly handy to us because they actually fit the wee one. (they were gerber brand, i think, which seems to run small) 6 is definitely plenty because you will be amazed at how much laundry you'll do (well, most of it is tiny laundry, but you'll be doing it much more frequently!).

depending on weather in late spring/early summer, they may also be the right heft of layer to put over a onesie.

so grandma: stop.buying.now!
